I’ve been thinking about this phrase: ‘financial freedom.’ It shows up everywhere. Blog posts, podcasts, conversations at coffee shops. But what does it actually mean? Free from what, exactly?

Most people put a number on freedom. $1 million. $2 million. Whatever lets you ‘never worry about money again.’ But here’s something curious: I know people who hit their number and still check their account balance every morning. The number was supposed to be the destination. Instead, it became a new kind of prison.

Freedom From or Freedom To?

There are two kinds of freedom, and we mix them up constantly. Freedom from bills, from worry, from checking the balance. Then there’s freedom to travel, to quit, to say no. The strange part? You can have the second without the first. You could have $50,000 and feel free to make choices. Or $500,000 and feel trapped by protecting it.

You organize your entire life around accumulating enough to stop thinking about accumulation. It’s like trying to fall asleep by focusing really hard on sleeping.
